What does it take to be named one of Canada’s Safest Employers?
Regardless of the award category, each winner of a Canada’s Safest Employer Award has one thing in common: They truly care about worker health and safety. Nominees are judged based on various health and safety measures, including employee training, occupational health and safety management systems, incident reporting and investigation, emergency readiness and innovative initiatives related to worker health and safety.
What are the award categories and what types of organizations can be nominated?
Canada’s Safest Employer Awards celebrates organizations from different industries in industry-specific award categories that include: Building and Construction, Health Care, Mining and Natural Resources (includes fish and forestry), Transportation (land, sea and air), Hospitality, Manufacturing, Oil and Gas, Public Sector/Non-profit, Retail and Services, and Utilities and Electrical.
Special awards are also included for: Wellness, Psychological Safety, and Young Worker Safety.
The most prestigious award of the night is Canada’s Best Health + Safety Culture Award. This award is considered to be the top prize! It is awarded to the organization with the strongest health and safety culture in all of Canada. The winner of this award makes health and safety a priority for every employee, including their community, networks and areas of influence.
Why nominate your organization?
Nominating your organization is a great opportunity to showcase its accomplishments to a wider audience. The award winners for each industry category are chosen in August and are then interviewed for an article in the October/November issue of Canadian Occupational Safety magazine. Winners are also interviewed on camera and their workplace is featured in a video that is shown on the night of the awards gala.
The exception to this process are the finalists in the Canada’s Best Health + Safety Culture Award category. Each finalist in this category will be visited by a third-party auditor for on-site observations and the winner of this award will be announced at the gala on October 24, 2017 in Toronto, Ontario.
When is the deadline for nominations?
The deadline for nominations is June 1, 2017. After you have submitted your nomination, Canada’s Safest Employers will send eligible nominees a perception survey that must be completed by their employees in order to be eligible for the award.
